Our number one concern is the safety of our player community

RuneScape users' accounts were stolen via phishing websites that tricked unsuspecting players into providing their login credentials. Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard said, "Account theft and the use of OSRS Items fraudulent websites is a problem facing all online games industries and Jagex maintains an expert team to tackle any illegal activity in our games."

"Wherever there's evidence that somebody has committed an offense (as happens with hijacking, phishing, or fraud) We work closely together with police agencies across the globe to prosecute them.Gerhard continued, "Our number one concern is the safety of our player community. We understand the importance players place on their accounts." The theft of a RuneScape accounts should not be considered any different from the theft of valuable items like a television or car. Players spend years developing their characters.

Our internal investigations found that only a handful of individuals are responsible for over 95% of all account hijacking in RuneScape and we take a zero tolerance approach to anyone who tries to compromise the security of our lively community. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the skilled and hard-working individuals at the PCeU as well as the FBI, who are assisting us in similar efforts within the USA."

"A 23-year-old man was arrested in Avon & Somerset on the morning of Tues 24th Nov by police officers of the Police Central e-crime Unit, in connection with an allegation that a number of RuneScape gaming accounts had been hacked and misappropriated" stated a PCeU Spokesperson. PCeU detectives worked closely together with JAGEX following the breach being discovered. This collaboration allowed the collection of sufficient evidence to allow for the immediate detention of the suspect.

"Those who seek to interfere with other gamers' online experiences could be guilty of Buy RS3 Gold crimes that are criminal and may be prosecuted," stated the PCeU Spokesperson. "The PCeU will continue its work with the gaming industry to look into the allegations and, if necessary, take appropriate action."
